January 2025 AHIMA & YOU Members Spotlight

Dr. Aerian Tatum is from Baltimore, Maryland, where she developed an early passion for healthcare. As a teenager, she enjoyed volunteering at hospitals in the city and often wondered about the various careers that would allow her to work in a hospital environment. After changing her major five times and switching colleges, She finally discovered health information management at East Carolina University.

Jessica Johnson, RHIA Shares AHIMA24 Experience

Connection, purpose, inspiration, and change—all fueled by people—made AHIMA24 truly special. This year’s event left a lasting impression on me both professionally and personally.

Volunteering was a highlight. Spending time reviewing resumes, hosting mock interviews, and helping with LinkedIn profiles reminded me why this work matters. The people I met, each with their own story of courage and determination, inspired me and reinforced the difference we can make in each other’s lives.

The openness of AHIMA to listen and adapt stood out. Conversations with leaders like Chrys Bell about the M2M mentorship program showed a genuine commitment to meaningful change. Kevin Klauer’s candid acknowledgment of past missteps and renewed focus on putting members first demonstrated authentic leadership and the power of purposeful action. The launch of the Leadership Academy is a promising step forward, creating new opportunities to grow and shape the future of our field.

Keynotes from Diana Nyad and Scott Hamilton were unforgettable. Their stories of resilience, embracing failure, and finding strength in adversity were powerful reminders that persistence and compassion are essential—not just for others, but for ourselves too.

"Most of all, the people made AHIMA24 unforgettable. Reconnecting with old friends, forming new connections, and learning from passionate professionals reignited my dedication to health information. "

Jessica Johnson, RHIA
