AHIMA 2021 President/Chair Katherine Lusk Recognized as a DirectTrust Interoperability Hero

CHICAGO – February 17, 2022 – AHIMA is pleased its 2021 President/Chair Katherine Lusk, MHSM, RHIA, FAHIMA, has been named a DirectTrust Interoperability Hero. DirectTrust is a nonprofit healthcare industry alliance created to support secure, identity-verified electronic exchanges of protected health information.

“A passion for the exchange of trusted health information has been an important tenant of my career,” Lusk said. “I am honored to be recognized by DirectTrust as an Interoperability Hero and humbled to be in the company of those who have earned the same recognition.”

The Interoperability Hero initiative identifies organizations, teams, or individuals that advance interoperability. AHIMA defines interoperability as the ability to capture, communicate and exchange data accurately, effectively, securely, and consistently with different information technology systems, software applications, and networks—while ensuring data remains preserved or unaltered.

“As president and chair of AHIMA, Katherine advocated for patient identification education and standardization,” said AHIMA CEO Wylecia Wiggs Harris, PhD, CAE. “She regularly brings attention to important resources like AHIMA’s policy on interoperability and our patient naming policy, as well as the Project US@ Companion Guide.”

AHIMA’s new President/Chair Tim Keough, MPA, RHIA, FAHIMA, said Lusk is known around the industry for her drive and commitment to enhancing interoperability.

“Katherine leads the Texas Interoperability Collaborative, co-led Epic’s Care Everywhere Governing Council, and served on the Office of the National Coordinator for Health Information Technology’s Patient Identity Workgroup,” Keough said. “She is indeed an Interoperability Hero and is so deserving of this recognition.”
